Academic Freedom Under Fire

Over thirty UCLA faculty members have been politically targeted by the radical conservative Bruin Alumni Association (BAA). The BAA claims to be protecting students from "indoctrination" and "biased" teaching by left-wing professors. But the group's online profiles focus on professors' political activities outside the classroom--e.g., petitions, rallies, publications, political donations.

In a recent UC-AFT/CFT press statement, UC-AFT vice-president Mike Rotkin observed: “The attack not only affects the thirty targeted professors but could have a chilling effect on anyone who teaches at the university. If one looks at the backers of this group, it's obvious that this is part of a wider effort to create a political litmus test at the university. It's very reminiscent of the McCarthy period in the 50s -- something we hoped we had put behind us.
