ARTICLE I. NAME, AFFILIATIONS AND ORGANIZATION

Section 1. Name. This organization shall be known as the University Council - American Federation of Teachers, hereinafter referred to as UC-AFT.

Section 2. Affiliations with Organizations. The member locals of the UC-AFT shall be affiliates of the American Federation of Teachers (AFL-CIO) and the California Federation of Teachers. All locals so affiliated at all campuses of the University of California shall be eligible for membership in UC-AFT.

Section 3. Council. The highest governing body within UC-AFT shall be the Council of locals, hereinafter referred to as the ?Council?. The Council shall have the authority to make all such rules and regulations, and to adopt such policies and execute such actions as it may deem necessary to fulfill Council objectives, consistent with this Constitution. Any powers held by the Council, except the election of officers, may be delegated by the Council as it sees fit.

How to Join

Fill out the membership form and give it to your UC-AFT field representative, or send it to UC-AFT, [insert address here].

Member or Fee Payer?
All UC non-senate faculty (Unit 18) and librarians (Unit 17) are represented by UC-AFT as a condition of employment. However, you are not automatically a member of the union. Non-members in the represented units pay a "fair share fee"; members pay membership dues. Either way, the amount is the same: 1.35% of gross monthly salary, capped at $65. (Note: for senate faculty members, the dues are .996% of monthly gross, capped at $55.)

About Us

University Council-American Federation of Teachers represents librarians and non-senate faculty (lecturers and others) at the University of California. We have negotiated and administered statewide collective bargaining contracts, or Memoranda of Understanding, for the librarians (Unit 17) and non-senate faculty (Unit 18) since 1983.

While senate faculty are not currently protected by a collective bargaining agreement, many belong to UC-AFT for other reasons: legal protections, member benefits provided by CFT and AFT, and/or a political allegiance to the labor movement.

Our statewide council meets quarterly and consists of the elected statewide officers plus representatives from each campus local. UC-AFT is affiliated with the California Federation of Teachers, the American Federation of Teachers, and the AFL-CIO.
