About Us

University Council-American Federation of Teachers represents librarians and non-senate faculty (lecturers and others) at the University of California. We have negotiated and administered statewide collective bargaining contracts, or Memoranda of Understanding, for the librarians (Unit 17) and non-senate faculty (Unit 18) since 1983.

While senate faculty are not currently protected by a collective bargaining agreement, many belong to UC-AFT for other reasons: legal protections, member benefits provided by CFT and AFT, and/or a political allegiance to the labor movement.

Our statewide council meets quarterly and consists of the elected statewide officers plus representatives from each campus local. UC-AFT is affiliated with the California Federation of Teachers, the American Federation of Teachers, and the AFL-CIO.
